Advanced course in trauma counselling for the care of clients with complex mental trauma disorders (SPIM-30-CTP)

(TIL – last update 1-3-2015 according to the guidelines of international and German mental trauma bodies ISSTD, ESTD, DeGPT and GPTG)
Complements the treatment spectrum of psychoanalysis, depth psychology, cognitive behaviour therapy and child and adolescent psychotherapy

Admission criteria for the Federal Republic of Germany:
for the further education course of trauma counsellor for the counselling of complex trauma disorders according to the SPIM-30-CT concept:

1) Degree in
- medicine, psychology, pedagogy
- clinical social work
- vocational degree in youth work and education studies
- vocational degree in adult social work in cooperation with psychiatry

2) several years of professional experience – or, by exception, new practitioners – in social, pedagogical or administrative areas of work in which dissociative / complexly traumatised patients form part of the daily schedule.

3) How to enter:
3.1) Please send the following documents per post:
a) a letter stating your interest in the course of your choice and your reasons for wishing to enter it
b) copies of diplomas for foundation counselling courses or other specified qualifications
c) copies of any other further education seminars you have successfully completed relevant to counselling
d) your professional CV incl. a passport photo
3.2) After we have verified your documents the TIL-office will notify you whether the documents you have submitted satisfy our entry requirements or not. If not, we will request supplementary documentation. But if all our requirements have been met, we will invite you to a preliminary interview.
3.3) Payment of an administrative fee of €80,- for the application process into the TIL-account or the account of the Leipzig Academy for Integrative Psychotherapy with the reference: name, administrative fee, course title.
3.4) After reception of the administrative fee we will propose a time and date for the preliminary interview.
3.5) In this interview we will personally discuss the course requirements together with your application and also compare and constrast the course content with your personal requirements.

(P.S.: the admission criteria for applicants from other countries can be requested per phone, email or fax from the TIL-directorate)
After mutual agreement about the objectives and requirements of the course you will receive a contract for the course. You can then send us the signed contract after a period for consideration. The course will officially commence when you receive our invititation with the times and dates for all the seminars.

Curriculum for SPIM-30-CTP seminars:

The seminars cover 16 hours within two days are conducted in the space of 2,5 to 3 years.

1. Basics of the SPIM 30 Model (Tasting seminar)

  1. Basic seminar on the terms and concepts from the SPIM 30 Model, theory and practical exercises.
  2. Brain physiology
  3. Clinical work with attachment, dissoziation, affect disorders, transferences and introjections
  4. Body oriented approaches with traumatized clients
  5. Concurrent individual and group therapy with trauma­tized, dissociative patients
  6. Implementing play therapy and re-nurturing settings
  7. Differentiating trauma therapy, trauma counseling and publicity work
2. Advanced Seminar I (specifics of dissociative disorders)
  1. Concepts of dissociation with regard to man made disasters
  2. Structural changes in dissociative disorders and implications for dealing with transferences, counter transferen­ces, resistances, compromized mentalization capacities
  3. Psychoeducative settings for different regulation states according to SPIM 30
  4. Application of Animated (beseelbare) therapy Objects and how to employ them appropriately for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes (working with implicit associations)
  5. Fostering ressources
  6. Understanding the False Memory controversy
3. Advanced Seminar II (dialogue seminar)
  1. Dialogue training of basic strategies, clarifying the framework
  2. Focused trauma exploration and goal oriented conversation
  3. Creating psychoeducative metaphors for clients, using handouts
  4. Training affect regulation
  5. Dealing with relatives (supporters or perpetrators?) and slander and betrayal
  6. Benefits of individual and group therapy in different phases
4. Advanced Seminar III (stabilization seminar)
  1. Important cognitive, interactive and psychoeducative rules and exercises for stabilization
  2. Using SPIM 30 stabilization handouts
  3. Advanced settings to address lacking experiences of dissociative clients (re-parenting and modelling play and everyday skills) paper pencil exercises
  4. Fostering social training in positive social fields, groups and circle of friends
  5. Discussing emergency plans for patients
5. Advanced Seminar IV (perpetrator attachment / perpetrator introjects)
  1. Understanding unconscious reenactment in the counselling relationship or in the client‘s outside world
  2. Phases of detaching from perpetrator structures and reduce the negative impact of perpetrator introjects step by step
  3. Indication for statement settings to address perpetrator introjects
  4. Using CSEPT settings for gestalt therapeutic diagnostics
  5. Discussion about retraumatising, compensating and chronifying concepts of living in dissociative clients
6. Advanced Seminar V (trauma confrontation & processing seminar I)
  1. Indications for trauma confrontation, imparting basic rules to understand and if necessary refer to a therapist for trauma processing
  2. Training in self-experience exercises to review stabilization criteria and interventions for reorientation in case of spontaneous flashbacks.
  3. Introduction of the concept of parallelization and processing techniques like screening, LMDR and change of perspective.
  4. Self experience with animated therapy objects in trauma confrontation settings (CSEPT).
  5. Differences in the trauma work with adults or children
  6. Conclusion of individual goals for further training and self-experience to become more adapt at trauma diagnostics and processing.
7. Advanced Seminar VI (trauma confrontation & processing seminar II)
  1. Repeating and deepening of all prior seminars by discus­sing case examples.
  2. Exercising difficult counselling situations in role play
  3. Supervision of the participant‘s DVD-sequences from their sessions in order for them to adjust their practice according to new insights.
  4. Case oriented comparison of different trauma processing techniques.
  5. Excersises in perspektive taking in imaginative work with dissociative disorders
8. Advanced Seminar VII (working with parts seminar)
  1. In depth work with parts in dissociative disorders according to the SPIM 30 Model
  2. Exercises in implementing small island settings (up to three parts) with the state, plank and bridge techniques
  3. Exercises in working with switches in more complex state settings
  4. Processing hardened state dialogues with highly dissociative resistance
  5. Discussion on the problem of patients who have ongoing contact with perpetrators
  6. Limitatons of state settings within psychodynamic work
9. Advanced Seminar VIII (integration seminar)
  1. Revision of the previous seminar contents from psycho­education and trauma confrontation to integrative differen­tiation of social conclusions illustrated by case examples
  2. Integration of insights from individual, group and social therapy from different points of view
  3. Involving children or partners in advanced therapy/counseling
  4. Integration of expert literature with clients
  5. Using tutorial DVD’s (SPIM 30 or from other sources)

10. Supervision Seminar or Special Seminar with Guest Lecturers

  1. According to level of development of the training group, their interests and the current possibilities this seminar can be either used for case introductions for exam preparation or to organize an external speaker to lecture on another trauma therapy technique.
  2. The goal is to reach an overview of trauma therapeutic therapy and counseling techniques to extend the vision to include a broad range of methods.
  3. Participants should introduce a practical case example, outlining the diagnostics, the client’s problems and the treatment they implemented according to the SPIM 30 Model and other methods.
  4. How to write case reports is likewise a topic of this seminar

Practical Requirements to apply for exams

Two short term cases documented each by one supervised video and a complete treatment protocol Two long term cases documented each by two supervised videos and a complete treatment protocol.

Final Colloquium

Admission depends on the successful completion of all seminars as listed above. All required case documentations including supervision need to be handed in and accepted by the trainers. Both trainers conduct the final 90 minutes colloquium with a small group covering all major topics and fields from the training seminars.

Seminar costs

Seminar fees and terms and conditions of the Leipzig Academy for Integrative Psychotherapy apply (Leipziger Akademie für Ganzheitliche Psychotherapie, the mother organisation of the TIL). For instance, 250 EUR early bird pricing for a two-day seminar (300 EUR when booked later).

• Individual and group supervision can be booked for the following rates:

- individual supervision: 45 min for €80,-
- group supervision (3 persons): 90 min for €50,-

• Non-recurring Costs:

- Admission interview: 80,– Euro
- SPIM 30 Manual: 50,– Euro
- Final colloquium: 100,– Euro
- Assessment of each submitted case documentation:
    Short term case 40,– € (DVD and protocol)
    Long term case 60,– € (DVD and protocol)
